🔍 Key Concepts

• SOLAS lifeboat and liferaft equipment requirements for parachute rockets • Specific requirements in 46 CFR and MODU/offshore drilling unit regulations for distress signals • Difference between hand-held flares, smoke signals, and rocket-propelled parachute flares

💭 Think About

• Think about why offshore drilling units might need more or fewer rocket parachute flares compared with a standard SOLAS lifeboat or liferaft. • Consider whether the requirement is per unit (rig) or per survival craft (lifeboat/liferaft). • Ask yourself if the minimum is a small emergency set, or enough for multiple launches over an extended period while awaiting rescue.

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify the specific CFR or SOLAS table that lists required distress signals for offshore drilling units or MODUs, not just general cargo ships or lifeboats. • Check whether the regulation specifies a number of parachute rockets distinct from hand flares and smoke signals. • Confirm if the requirement is a total minimum on board the unit, not per lifeboat or per life raft.
