Q

What is the meaning of a flag hoist consisting of the code letters "WM" (Whiskey Mike) when displayed by an icebreaker?

🔍 Key Concepts

• International Code of Signals (INTERCO) meanings for two-letter hoists • Special signals used only by icebreakers to direct escorted vessels • Difference between signals meaning start, stop, and end of an operation

💭 Think About

• Ask yourself: when an icebreaker wants ships to begin moving in formation behind it, what kind of instruction would be most useful? • Look at each choice and decide which one clearly tells an escorted vessel how to maneuver in relation to the icebreaker. • Consider which options describe a status report (what is happening) versus a maneuvering order (what you should do).

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify which WM meaning in INTERCO is specifically restricted to icebreaker use. • Check whether WM is telling you to change your vessel’s motion (start/stop/follow) or just reporting the state of icebreaker support. • Eliminate any options that could apply to many types of vessels, not just an icebreaker leading traffic through ice.
