🔍 Key Concepts

• Anchoring terminology used on merchant vessels • Difference between paying out, heaving in, and short stay • How the windlass is operated when adjusting anchor chain

💭 Think About

• When a vessel is anchored and you "veer" the chain, what physically happens to the length of chain between the bow and the anchor? • Does veering the chain increase or decrease the scope (ratio of chain to water depth)? • Which option describes an action that changes the length of chain, rather than just holding or recovering it?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which choice clearly means letting more chain run out vs taking it in • Distinguish short stay (how the chain leads and tension on it) from simply changing chain length • Check which option involves securing/locking the windlass rather than moving the chain.
