🔍 Key Concepts

• Boom handling terminology used with ship’s cargo gear or derricks • Difference between raising/lowering a boom and swinging/spotting it • How the topping lift or topping winch acts on a boom

💭 Think About

• Think about which motion of the boom is controlled by the topping lift or a winch called the topping winch. • Ask yourself: when you "top" something in rigging terms, are you changing its height or swinging it sideways? • Consider which answer choices describe a vertical movement versus a horizontal movement of the boom.

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which options describe vertical motion (up or down) and which describe horizontal motion (side to side). • Recall that the topping lift changes the boom’s angle above the deck—decide which choice best matches that action. • Eliminate any option that mainly describes moving the boom sideways along the ship rather than changing its elevation.
