🔍 Key Concepts

• Luffing refers to raising or lowering a crane boom by changing its angle, not swinging it sideways • Think about what happens to the load when you change the boom angle on a level-luffing crane • Distinguish between boom motion (angle/height) and load motion (up/down or side-to-side)

💭 Think About

• When a crane boom luffs (changes angle), what would normally happen to the vertical position of the load if nothing special is done? • Which option describes a situation where the load’s height above the deck or dock does not change while the boom angle is being altered? • Which answer choices are talking about the boom’s movement vs. the load’s movement, and which one most directly involves controlling the load height during luffing?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which options mention the load versus just the boom • Check which motion is luffing (changing boom angle up/down) and which is slewing (swinging left/right) • Verify which choice clearly states that the load’s vertical position is controlled during the luffing movement
