What are the characteristics of the Reserve Source of Energy under GMDSS?
• GMDSS Reserve Source of Energy (RSE) purpose and when it is used • Relationship between the RSE and the ship’s main/emergency electrical systems • Regulatory requirement that GMDSS must continue to operate after a general power failure
• In a total blackout of the ship’s normal electrical power, what must happen to the GMDSS equipment, and where does its power come from? • Would a true reserve source be allowed to depend on the same systems that just failed, or must it be able to operate independently when needed? • Which choices would defeat the whole point of having a "reserve" dedicated to distress and safety communications?
• Verify that the RSE must function during loss of ship’s main and emergency power • Check whether regulations require the RSE to be independent when actually powering GMDSS equipment • Eliminate any options that make the RSE useless in a blackout or propulsion failure situation
