What are flame screens used for?
• Flame screen function in fuel tank vent systems • Direction of flame travel (into a space vs. out of a space) • Locations where flame screens are commonly installed on tank vessels and small craft
• Is a flame screen meant to protect people directly, or to protect a space (like a tank or system) from flame propagation? • Think about where a flame screen would physically be installed: in front of a firefighter, at a tank opening, at a vent, or in an exhaust line? • What is the main fire risk with fuel tanks: flames starting inside the tank and coming out, or an outside ignition source flashing back into the tank vapors?
• Identify whether the primary purpose is to stop flame travel through openings rather than to block heat or smoke • Decide if it mainly protects tanks and their vapors or personnel • Ask yourself where you have seen fine metal mesh or gauze used in vents on fuel systems and what direction of flame it is meant to stop
