To receive all mandatory MSI using the SafetyNET™ system the vessel must:
• Maritime Safety Information (MSI) broadcast areas: NAVAREA vs. Inmarsat Ocean Region • How SafetyNET™ selects which broadcasts you receive (position-based vs destination-based) • Role of the NAVAREA Coordinator in MSI broadcasts
• Ask yourself: Does a standard shipboard SafetyNET™ receiver normally require you to personally contact the NAVAREA coordinator, or does it automatically receive broadcasts in a defined area? • Consider whether MSI is intended only for your destination area, or for the area you are currently navigating in for safety and distress alerts. • Think about what information your SafetyNET™ terminal needs to ‘know’ in order to filter and correctly deliver relevant MSI: is it your position, your destination ocean region, or some kind of registration?
• Verify whether NAVAREA coordinators send messages to individual ships by request, or by area broadcast to all ships in their NAVAREA. • Check how Inmarsat Ocean Regions relate to MSI reception – are they selected manually for a destination, or handled automatically via ship position? • Confirm what key setup step on the terminal ensures you get all mandatory MSI for the area you are currently in.
