The tankship Northland is loaded as shown in table BL-0025 below. Use the salmon colored pages in the Stability book to determine the hogging numeral.
• Use the salmon-colored longitudinal bending stress tables that match the BL-0025 sheet for M/V Northland • Relate each tank’s listed value to its numeral contribution to hogging/sagging (pay attention to the sign convention on the salmon pages) • Remember that the hogging numeral is found by combining the individual tank numerals according to the forward and aft of midships guidance on the page
• How does the stability book tell you to treat numerals for spaces forward of midships versus aft of midships when calculating hogging? • Which tanks on BL-0025 are actually contributing non‑zero values, and how should each of those values be combined to get one total hogging numeral? • After you total the numerals, is there an instruction to round or adjust the value before comparing it to the choices?
• Identify on the salmon page which column or row is labelled Hogging Numeral and use only that column for your total • Verify whether any tanks have to be added or subtracted based on their location (forward/aft) and the sign convention shown • After summing, compare your value carefully with the choices, paying attention to decimal places and any specified rounding rule in the book
