The reading on the micrometer scale shown in figure "C" in the illustration is __________. See illustration GS-0013.
• How to read the sleeve (barrel) scale on an inch micrometer in 0.025 inch increments • How to add the thimble scale reading in thousandths (0.001 inch) to the sleeve reading • Making sure you are reading figure C only and not the other figures
• First, decide what the last fully visible 0.025 inch mark on the sleeve is to the left of the thimble edge. What base reading does that give you? • Next, find which thimble line lines up exactly with the horizontal reference line on the sleeve. How many thousandths of an inch does that represent, and what do you get when you add it to the base sleeve reading? • Compare your final sum to the choices and ask: does it reasonably match how far the spindle appears to be open compared with 0.300, 0.350, 0.450, etc.?
• Be sure you only count full 0.025 inch divisions that are completely visible, not the one partly covered by the thimble edge • Verify the thimble number and tick marks: each numbered division is 0.005 inch and each small line is 0.001 inch • Double‑check that your sleeve reading (to the nearest 0.025) plus your thimble reading (in 0.001) exactly equals one of the answer options before choosing
