🔍 Key Concepts

• KG (height of center of gravity) and how it affects initial stability (GM) • Using a stability booklet / allowable KG curve at a given draft • Relationship between draft, KG, and required GM for a mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) like COASTAL DRILLER

💭 Think About

• At a draft of 10.5 ft, where would you find the allowable KG on a typical stability or operating manual curve for this unit? • How does increasing KG (raising the center of gravity) affect GM and the vessel’s ability to meet minimum stability criteria? • Given this is a normal transit condition, would you expect the allowable KG to be relatively low, moderate, or very high compared to the unit’s overall depth?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify on the allowable KG vs. draft curve (or table) where the 10.5‑ft draft line intersects the ‘normal transit’ limiting curve • Check that the chosen value of KG still provides at least the minimum required GM for transit specified in the manual • Confirm that the unit is not near its absolute upper limit of KG at this draft, which would leave little or no positive GM margin
