🔍 Key Concepts

• EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) testing requirements for small passenger vessels • Difference between required tests and recommended checks in manufacturers’ manuals • How often critical emergency equipment is usually inspected by regulation vs by routine practice

💭 Think About

• Think about how often it is reasonable and practical to formally test an EPIRB on a small passenger vessel without causing unnecessary battery drain or wear • Compare the testing interval you remember for EPIRBs with intervals for other equipment, like navigation lights, bilge alarms, and fire detection systems • Ask yourself which option best balances regulatory safety standards with real-world practicality on a busy passenger vessel

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify in the small passenger vessel regulations (46 CFR Subchapter T) what specific interval is stated for EPIRB testing • Check that the interval you choose would not be so frequent that it risks unnecessary activation or battery depletion • Confirm that the requirement refers to a test using the built-in test function, not to a full activation or servicing of the EPIRB
