Q

The Master must maintain the Oil Record Book on board for which duration?

🔍 Key Concepts

• MARPOL requirements for Oil Record Books (Annex I – oil pollution prevention) • Difference between retention period on board and how long the company might keep copies ashore • How long regulators may look back when inspecting pollution-control paperwork

💭 Think About

• Think about whether inspectors need to see just recent oil transfers or a longer operating history. How far back would make sense for spotting patterns of improper discharges? • Consider what is more typical for statutory record books (like Garbage Record Book, Oil Record Book, etc.): are these usually kept for weeks, months, or several years? • Ask yourself which option seems too short to be useful to investigators after a pollution incident, and which options might be longer than international minimums.

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify the minimum on-board retention period for the Oil Record Book under MARPOL Annex I (Reg. to be checked in current text). • Check if the period is expressed in years rather than months in the convention text. • Confirm you are thinking about the master’s duty to keep the ORIGINAL book on board, not company archives ashore.
