The DEEP DRILLER is loaded as shown is Sample Load Form #4 (Drilling). What would be the change in vertical moments for Fresh Water if the entire contents of Drill Water Tank 5P are transferred to Drill Water Tank 5S?
• Vertical moment on a load form (weight × vertical center of gravity height) • Effect of transferring weight between tanks at the same longitudinal and vertical position • Difference between vertical moments and transverse moments (list/heel)
• Look at the load form and compare the vertical center of gravity (KG or VC) of Drill Water Tank 5P and Drill Water Tank 5S. Are they at different vertical heights or the same? • When you move a weight from one tank to another, how does the ship’s total vertical moment change if the two tanks have identical vertical positions? • Ask yourself: does shifting weight from port to starboard affect trim/VCG (vertical) or mainly list/heel (transverse)?
• Verify the vertical height (KG or VC) used for Tank 5P and Tank 5S on Sample Load Form #4. • Calculate (or note) the weight in Drill Water Tank 5P and its vertical moment before transfer, then what the vertical moment would be in Drill Water Tank 5S after transfer. • Confirm whether the sum of vertical moments for the vessel changes when the same weight is moved between two tanks with the same vertical center of gravity.
