The DEEP DRILLER is loaded as shown in the Sample Load Form #1 (Transit). What are the new vertical moments if the entire contents of Salt Water Ballast Tanks 1P and 1S are discharged?
• Vertical moment on a stability/load form (weight × vertical distance from baseline) • Effect of removing a weight on total displacement and total vertical moments • Using the existing Sample Load Form #1 (Transit) to read tank weights and VCGs before adjusting
• On the load form, how do you normally compute the total vertical moment from individual items (lightship, tanks, cargo, etc.)? Think about the basic formula for each line item. • When you completely discharge a tank, what happens to: (1) the total displacement, and (2) the total vertical moments? Do you add or subtract the tank’s vertical moment? • Are there two tanks being emptied here? How does that affect the arithmetic you do with their combined weight and combined vertical moments?
• From Sample Load Form #1, carefully note the weight and vertical center (VCG) for Salt Water Ballast Tanks 1P and 1S. • Compute each tank’s individual vertical moment using the form’s convention (check the units and reference line). • Be sure you remove both tanks’ moments from the original total before comparing your new total vertical moment to the answer choices.
