The DEEP DRILLER, at 58.0 feet draft in sea water, loads 200 long tons. What is the new displacement?
• Displacement change when loading weight • Using TPI (tons per inch immersion) or draft–displacement curves • Unit consistency: long tons and inches/feet of draft
• How does adding 200 long tons of weight affect the vessel’s displacement number? Is the change added or subtracted? • Do you need the full displacement, or just the change in displacement? How would you combine the original displacement with the added weight? • If you know how many tons change the draft by one inch, how can you relate 200 tons to a change in draft and displacement?
• Make sure you understand whether displacement already includes the vessel’s existing weight before loading • Confirm that you are working in long tons, not metric tons or short tons • Verify that you are adjusting the original displacement correctly by the amount of weight loaded, in the right direction (increase vs decrease)
