Since electrical burn victims may be in shock, what is the FIRST medical indicator to check for?
• Primary survey / ABCs of first aid (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) • Typical effects of electric shock on the body (cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest) • Difference between life-threatening problems and secondary injuries
• In any emergency, what do you check BEFORE looking for broken bones, bleeding, or concussion? • How can electric current affect the heart and lungs, and which of those functions must be confirmed immediately? • Which option, if ignored, could cause the victim to die within seconds, even if all other injuries are treated?
• Identify which choice relates to airway, breathing, and circulation • Decide which condition is immediately life-threatening if absent • Make sure you are focusing on what to check first, not what is also important later in the assessment
