Should you use a power drill without eye protection?
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) for eye and face safety when using power tools • How flying debris, metal shavings, or wood chips behave when drilling • Standard shop safety rules for using powered hand tools on board or in a workshop
• What kinds of particles or fragments can a power drill create, and how fast might they move toward your face and eyes? • If your eyes are injured while using a drill, how quickly could that affect your ability to work safely on a vessel or in an emergency? • Do general maritime and industrial safety guidelines allow exceptions to eye protection rules just because you are careful or keep your distance?
• Verify what standard eye protection (goggles, safety glasses, face shield) is recommended for power tool use. • Check whether there are any situations where rules say it is acceptable to skip eye protection with rotating tools. • Consider if "being careful" or "keeping your face away" is ever listed as an approved substitute for PPE in basic safety training.
