Q

One of your ship's direct-drive steering gear drive motors needs to be replaced. In accordance with 46 CFR Subchapter J (Electrical Engineering), what minimum short-time rating should the replacement motor have in hours?

🔍 Key Concepts

• 46 CFR Subchapter J requirements for steering gear power units and motors • Difference between continuous rating and short-time rating for electric motors • Special requirements for direct-drive steering gear motors versus other types

💭 Think About

• Look in 46 CFR Subchapter J for the section that specifically talks about electrical steering gear requirements and note the exact short-time rating stated for direct-drive steering gear motors. • Ask yourself: Is the regulation asking for a long continuous duty rating, or just enough time to safely maneuver the ship in an emergency? • Compare how many minutes or hours are typically considered a standard short-time rating for critical machinery like steering gear.

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify the exact CFR section number in Subchapter J that covers steering gear motors (not just general motors). • Confirm whether the regulation uses minutes or hours when describing the short-time rating and convert if needed. • Make sure the option you select matches the minimum short-time rating stated, not a more conservative or operationally desirable value.
