In using SafetyNETTM for the receipt of MSI (Maritime Safety Information):
• SafetyNET as the system used to broadcast Maritime Safety Information (MSI) via Inmarsat • The role of Inmarsat-C SES login status in receiving scheduled vs. unscheduled messages • The need for Enhanced Group Call (EGC) capability to receive SafetyNET broadcasts
• Think about which types of MSI must be received even if the terminal is not fully logged in, for safety reasons. • Consider what additional function EGC provides in an Inmarsat-C terminal with respect to broadcast vs. individual messages. • Ask yourself: when the SES is properly logged in, does it receive only one category of MSI, or multiple categories (scheduled and/or unscheduled)?
• Verify which MSI messages are considered broadcasts and require EGC capability to receive. • Check whether distress and urgency broadcasts are designed to reach ships regardless of login status or only when logged in. • Confirm if logging in the SES affects reception of scheduled safety broadcasts differently from unscheduled distress/urgency broadcasts.
