In launching a lifeboat, when should the tricing pendants be released?
• Tricing pendants purpose during lifeboat launching • Sequence of steps: lowering from stowage, bowsing in, embarking people, then swinging out/down • Risk of hull damage or people injury if tricing pendants are released too early or too late
• Think about what the tricing pendants are holding the lifeboat in toward the ship to accomplish. At which point in the process is that job complete? • At what stage would you want the boat free to hang directly under the falls, rather than pulled in alongside? • Which option best matches the moment when it is safe for the boat to move away from the ship’s side without endangering embarked persons or the hull?
• Confirm in your mind when the crew actually embarks relative to the boat’s position alongside the ship. • Visualize whether the limit switch has anything to do with tricing pendants, or mainly with the davit/fall system. • Make sure the release point you pick would NOT leave people trying to embark a boat that is swinging out away from the ship or hard to reach.
