Question 1 of 31048

Q

If a Master must jettison a container loaded with hazardous material, he must, as soon as possible, notify the __________.

🔍 Key Concepts

• 33 CFR Part 160 – Notifications of vessel arrival, departure, and certain dangerous cargoes • Who has authority and responsibility for safety, security, and pollution response in a port area • Difference between an operational authority (Coast Guard) and advisory/inspection organizations

💭 Think About

• Which agency or official is directly responsible for coordinating emergency actions and pollution control when something hazardous enters the water from a vessel? • Look at the choices and ask: who has legal authority over the port and marine environment in that specific area, rather than national-level policy or cargo advisory functions? • Which option represents a local Coast Guard authority with jurisdiction over hazardous cargo incidents in U.S. ports?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify which entity in the choices has statutory authority over marine safety and environmental protection in U.S. ports • Check 33 CFR to see who issues safety and security zones and directs vessel traffic during hazardous situations • Distinguish between an advisory/inspection body and the regulatory enforcement authority for hazardous material incidents at sea or in port
