How many high waters usually occur each day on the East Coast of the United States?
• Semidiurnal tides versus diurnal tides • Typical tidal patterns along the U.S. East Coast • Difference between number of high waters and low waters in a tidal cycle
• Is the East Coast better known for having one main high tide each day, or two fairly regular high tides each day? • Think about common tide tables for East Coast ports you may have seen—how many high tides are usually listed per day? • If there are usually that many high waters, how many low waters would you normally expect in the same period?
• Confirm that most of the U.S. East Coast is described as having a semidiurnal tidal pattern • Check that in a semidiurnal tide, there are two of each tidal event within about 24 hours • Be sure you are counting only high waters, not total tidal events (highs plus lows)
