How can a SART's effective range be maximized?
⢠Search and Rescue Transponder (SART) operation and purpose ⢠How line of sight affects radar and radio range ⢠Effect of antenna height on detection range
⢠Think about whether radio and radar signals travel better over long distances when the antenna is low to the water or high above it. ⢠Consider what happens to range when you increase the height of either the shipâs radar or the targetâs reflector/transponder. ⢠Ask yourself which options affect signal propagation and which are just about orientation or power settings that may not exist on standard SARTs.
⢠Which option improves line of sight between the SART and the searching vesselâs radar? ⢠Which choice is consistent with how we mount EPIRBs, antennas, and radar reflectors to increase range? ⢠Eliminate any options that describe features or positions that are not typical of SOLAS-approved SART equipment.
