🔍 Key Concepts

• Lube oil flow path through the engine and filter housing • Difference between full-flow vs bypass/shunt filtration • Where the entire oil flow goes when the engine is running

💭 Think About

• Look at the illustration and trace where most of the oil is flowing: does all the oil go through the filter, or only a portion? • Ask yourself: if the filter became clogged, would oil still reach the bearings and moving parts? How would the system allow that? • Consider the purpose of each system name: what does ‘bypass’, ‘shunt’, ‘sump’, and ‘full-flow’ suggest about how the oil is routed?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify whether 100% of pump output passes through the filter before going to the engine, or only a small percentage is diverted through the filter • Check for any parallel path that allows oil to go around the filter element (pressure relief or bypass passage) • Confirm whether the filter is on a separate side-stream loop (indicating a bypass/shunt type) or directly in the main pressure line (indicating full-flow)
