🔍 Key Concepts

• Trace the oil flow path from the engine sump, through the pump(s), cooler, and filter to the engine bearings. • Understand the difference between full‑flow, shunt/bypass, and sump filtration in diesel engine lube oil systems. • Notice whether any line allows oil to reach the engine without first passing through the filter.

💭 Think About

• Follow the arrows/colors for suction and discharge and ask: once the oil leaves the pump and cooler, does the only route to the engine supply header go through the filter, or is there a parallel/unfiltered route? • Look at the relief valves: do they send oil around the filter back to the sump/suction, or do they provide a normal operating path that routinely bypasses the filter? • Which answer choice matches a system where a small side‑stream is filtered and returned to the sump, versus one where the entire delivery to the engine is filtered in series?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify whether all discharge from the lube oil pump(s) to the engine passes through the LO filter during normal operation. • Check if the line labeled LO supply header is downstream of the LO filter (in series) rather than in parallel. • Confirm that any bypass or relief lines route back to suction or the sump, not forward to the engine bearings in normal service.
