🔍 Key Concepts

• Difference between pulse turbo charging and constant pressure turbo charging in medium-speed diesel engines • How exhaust manifold design (separate cylinder groups vs common receiver) affects turbocharger operation • What visual clues in an intake/exhaust diagram indicate one vs two turbocharger stages or any boost control devices (valves, bypasses, wastegates)

💭 Think About

• Look carefully at how the exhaust from each cylinder reaches the turbine: does each cylinder (or small group) have a relatively direct, short run to the turbine, or is there a large common exhaust receiver first? • Check whether the diagram shows one turbocharger or two in series, and whether any kind of control valve or bypass on the compressor discharge is drawn. • Ask yourself: does the configuration in the picture seem designed to keep exhaust pulses strong and separate, or to smooth them out into an even pressure feeding the turbocharger?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify whether there is a large common exhaust manifold/receiver feeding the turbocharger, or individual/small-group branch pipes going directly to the turbine housing. • Verify whether there is only one turbocharger stage or clearly two stages in series (high‑pressure and low‑pressure). • Look for any boost control or bypass valves (such as a wastegate or similar) between the compressor outlet and the engine intake that would indicate boost-controlled operation.
