🔍 Key Concepts
• Flow sequence through an oily-water separator: where does oily bilge water enter, where does oil leave, and where does clean/processed water go?
• Difference between an inlet line (to the unit) and an outlet line (from the unit).
• How “processed” water is handled versus waste oil in pollution prevention systems (MARPOL / 15 ppm discharge requirement).
💭 Think About
• On a typical oily-water separator diagram, trace the direction of flow: does line E connect from the bilge/collection tank into the separator, or from the separator to somewhere else?
• Look at what equipment or space line E leads to (overboard discharge, sludge tank, bilge, or feed to the unit). What does that destination tell you about the function of the line?
• Compare the labels of the other lines on the illustration (bilge suction, sludge/waste oil line, overboard discharge, etc.). Which one is still not accounted for when you reach line E?
✅ Before You Answer
• Verify whether line E is carrying water entering the separator (inlet) or fluid leaving it (outlet).
• Confirm where line E terminates: overboard / discharge monitor, sludge or waste oil tank, or bilge/collection tank.
• Check that your chosen option matches both the direction of flow arrow and the type of fluid (oily mixture, mostly oil, or mostly clean water) shown along that part of the system.
