Q

What fitting on the mast works in conjunction with the shrouds to control side bend of the mast?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Relationship between shrouds and mast support • Which fittings are located on the mast versus on the hull or deck • Purpose and position of a spreader in a standing rigging system

💭 Think About

• First, picture where each option (hound, spreader, chainplate, crowfoot) is physically located on a typical sailboat rig. Which ones are actually attached to the mast? • Think about how shrouds run from the deck up the mast: what do they pass over or through that pushes them outboard and helps control the mast’s sideways bend? • Ask yourself which fitting’s main job is to change the angle of the shrouds to better support the middle section of the mast.

✅ Before You Answer

• Confirm which fitting is mounted partway up the mast rather than at the masthead or on the deck/hull. • Verify which item’s purpose is to hold shrouds outboard from the mast to reduce side flex and support mast shape. • Eliminate any options that are primarily attachment points at the deck or hull rather than a rigging “arm” on the mast itself.
