Question 1 of 31048

Q

When using a handheld smoke signal in a liferaft, at which location should you activate the signal?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Wind direction and drift when using pyrotechnic or smoke signals from a survival craft • Possible fire, smoke inhalation, and burn hazards in and around a small liferaft • How rescuers best see and track smoke from a distance or from the air

💭 Think About

• Think about where the smoke will travel relative to the liferaft if there is even a light breeze. Which position keeps smoke and sparks away from people and the raft? • In a very small, enclosed craft like a liferaft, what are the dangers of having concentrated smoke close to survivors? • From a helicopter or ship looking downwind of you, where would the smoke trail be most visible and least likely to obscure the raft itself?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify which option would keep smoke and burning residue from blowing back into the raft or onto survivors • Eliminate any options that would increase risk of igniting the raft, gear, or clothing • Focus on the position that provides a clear air supply for survivors while still creating a strong, visible smoke signal for rescuers
