🔍 Key Concepts

• Towknee location and purpose on a river towboat • Difference between fittings used for pushing (knees/bows) versus pulling (bitts, winches, towing machines) • Where the towboat actually makes contact with the barges when pushing a tow

💭 Think About

• Look at which labeled item is at the extreme forward part of the hull and is shaped or positioned to push against barges. • Ask yourself which structure must be heavily reinforced to take the pushing forces when the boat works in the river current. • Compare the labels near the bow: which one is a vertical/angled structure on the bow rather than a deck fitting or machinery item?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify that the item you choose is on the bow (forward end) where the tow pushes the barges. • Confirm it is a structural knee or face plate, not a winch, bitt, or fairlead. • Make sure the item is clearly in the pushing contact area, not up on the deck or aft near the stern.
