Q

If you see an individual fall overboard, which action(s) should you take?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Man overboard procedures on any vessel • Immediate alerting and communication when an emergency happens • Use of lifesaving appliances such as life buoys or rings

💭 Think About

• What is the very first thing others on board need to know when someone falls overboard? • Besides alerting people, what simple action can you take right away to help keep the person afloat and mark their position? • Who needs to be informed so the vessel’s speed and course can be changed quickly and safely?

✅ Before You Answer

• Make sure you include both raising the alarm and providing flotation to the person in the water • Confirm whether the bridge/command center must be informed during emergencies • Check if exam questions on emergencies usually expect all appropriate immediate actions, not just one step
