Question 1 of 31048

Q

Which group is sighted as being the originator of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention?

🔍 Key Concepts

• SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) is an international convention, not a domestic U.S. law • Think about which organization is responsible for global maritime safety standards • Consider which option is an international body versus a national agency or private classification society

💭 Think About

• Which of these groups has the authority to develop conventions that apply to all flag states worldwide, not just the United States? • Look at the names: which sounds like a government agency, which are private/industry organizations, and which is an intergovernmental maritime body? • Ask yourself: would a classification or standards society usually create international treaties, or simply help apply and enforce them?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which choice is an intergovernmental maritime organization rather than a national authority or private group • Distinguish between U.S.-only organizations and those with global membership • Confirm which group is commonly associated with drafting and maintaining SOLAS as an international convention
