Q

If you are fighting a fire below the main deck of your vessel, which action is most important concerning the stability of the vessel?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Vessel stability when taking on additional weight • Effect of fire-fighting water accumulation in low compartments • How free surface effect and water retention below deck can impact safety

💭 Think About

• Which action directly affects how much extra weight and free water you keep inside the hull while fighting the fire? • Among these choices, which one deals with preventing a harmful change to the vessel’s center of gravity and stability, rather than just controlling the fire itself? • Think about what happens if large amounts of water stay in a cargo hold or compartment below the main deck—how does that influence the risk of capsizing?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which option specifically removes or limits water weight inside the vessel • Consider how free surface effect from water sloshing in a compartment below deck impacts stability • Check which action is primarily related to stability, not just fire control or electrical safety
