Question 1 of 31048

Q

INTERNATIONAL ONLY Which lights is a 45-meter power-driven vessel pushing ahead or towing alongside required to display?

🔍 Key Concepts

• International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) lighting requirements for power-driven vessels • Difference between towing astern, pushing ahead, and towing alongside lights • How masthead lights and towing lights are arranged when a power-driven vessel is engaged in towing or pushing

💭 Think About

• First, decide whether pushing ahead or towing alongside is treated the same as towing astern for light requirements under the International Rules. • Ask yourself: when a power-driven vessel is engaged in towing or pushing, what changes from the normal power-driven vessel lights? Focus especially on the masthead lights. • Compare which choices describe masthead lights versus stern/towing lights, and eliminate any that clearly apply to a different type of vessel (e.g., vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver or not under command).

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify in the International Rules for Lights which rule covers towing and pushing (not the general power-driven vessel rule). • Check how many masthead lights are required and how they are arranged for a towing or pushing vessel over 50 meters versus under 50 meters, and see where 45 meters falls. • Confirm whether towing lights are used when the tow is ahead or alongside, or only when the tow is astern.
