Efficiency of a power transformer is determined by:
• Transformer losses: eddy current, hysteresis, and copper (I²R) losses • Difference between individual loss types and overall efficiency • How input power vs. output power is affected by multiple kinds of losses
• Ask yourself: Does efficiency depend on just one kind of loss, or on the total of all losses inside the transformer? • Which of these loss types occur in the core and which occur in the windings, and do both affect the output power? • Think about the formula for efficiency: how do all internal losses appear in that relationship between input and output power?
• Be clear on the definition of efficiency: (\eta = \frac{P_{out}}{P_{in}}). Which losses reduce (P_{out}) compared to (P_{in})? • Identify which answers list only one specific loss type versus a combination of all relevant losses. • Verify that you are considering both core losses and copper losses when thinking about overall efficiency.
