🔍 Key Concepts

• 46 CFR requirements for cargo pumproom ventilation on tank vessels built before 1968 • Difference between normal machinery space ventilation rates and tank vessel pumproom ventilation • Why faster air changes are critical where flammable vapors may accumulate

💭 Think About

• Think about how quickly flammable vapors can build up in an enclosed pumproom and what the Coast Guard would likely require to keep vapors below dangerous levels. • Compare each time option with what seems realistic for a complete air change in a confined space that must be safe for personnel entry and electrical equipment operation. • Ask yourself whether the requirement would be closer to typical comfort ventilation, or an emergency‑type high‑capacity ventilation, and which time options match that idea.

✅ Before You Answer

• Check 46 CFR Part 39/Part 35 (older tank vessel safety standards) for pumproom ventilation language and note the specified maximum time for a complete air change. • Verify that you are looking at the requirement for cargo pumprooms (not ballast tanks, not deck spaces, not engine rooms). • Confirm the requirement is for vessels constructed in 1965 (older construction standard) and not for vessels built after later amendments with different timing.
