• Navigation lights and sectors – red sidelight shows from dead ahead to 22.5° abaft the beam on the port side (Rule 21, Navigation Rules) • Your own course is 090° (due east) – relate what you see (on your port beam) to the relative bearing of the other vessel • Think about what relative position you must be in to see only the red sidelight (no masthead or green light)

• Sketch your vessel pointing east (090°). Mark your port beam and imagine where the other vessel must be located to lie on that beam • Recall: if you see only a red sidelight, are you looking at the other vessel’s port side, starboard side, or stern?
