BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND Which vessel would have no white lights visible when meeting her head-on?
• Power-driven vessel head-on situation under Rule 14 • Which vessels do or do not show masthead (white) lights in normal operations • Special lights or shapes for NUC (Not Under Command), RAM (Restricted Ability to Maneuver), trawling, and mine-clearing vessels
• In a head-on meeting at night, think about what lights you normally expect to see on a power-driven vessel: what white light(s) and where? • For each vessel type in the choices, ask: does this vessel ever operate without showing masthead (white) lights when making way? Or does it still show them plus some extra lights? • Which of these options might be not making way as a power-driven vessel and therefore would not show the normal masthead light pattern in a head-on encounter?
• Review Navigation Rules – Part C, Lights and Shapes, especially for trawling vessels, vessels not under command, and vessels restricted in ability to maneuver • Check which of these special vessels still keep the standard power-driven white masthead lights in addition to their special lights • Verify which category can be not under command and not making way, and how that affects the display of white lights in a head-on situation
