BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND Which signal may at some time be exhibited by a vessel trawling?
• Rule 26 – Fishing Vessels (trawling vs. other fishing) • Meaning of red over white / green over white / white over red light combinations • Difference between trawling and a vessel not under command or restricted in ability to maneuver
• First, recall the exact light combination prescribed for a vessel engaged in trawling—what colors, in what order, and how many lights? • Next, compare each choice to the standard light signals for: (1) fishing (trawling), (2) not under command, and (3) restricted in ability to maneuver. • Ask yourself: Is there any situation where a trawler could also be not under command or restricted in ability to maneuver, and would the Rules allow those additional signals?
• Verify in Rule 26 which colors and sequence are specifically for trawlers (fishing with gear that is dragging through the water). • Check which vertical double-lights (two whites, two reds, or white over red) are associated with not under command vs. restricted in ability to maneuver vs. fishing. • Confirm whether a vessel may ever combine status lights (for example, trawling AND restricted in ability to maneuver) and how the Rules address this.
