BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND When should the fog signal of a manned vessel under tow be sounded?
• Rule 35 – Sound signals in restricted visibility • Special signals for vessels towing and vessels being towed • Difference between an unmanned and a manned tow
• Look up what sound signals are required for a towing vessel in fog, then see if there is an additional requirement for a manned vessel being towed. • Think about whether signals from the tug and the tow should be at the same time or separated in time so other vessels can tell them apart. • Ask yourself: does the manned tow make its signal independently, or is its timing described relative to the tug’s signal?
• Verify exactly what Rule 35 says about “any vessel being towed, or if more than one vessel is towed, the last vessel of the tow, if manned”. • Check whether the rule mentions a time separation (in seconds) between the tug’s and tow’s sound signals. • Confirm if the rule ever says that the manned tow is not required to make any fog signal when the tug is already signaling.
