BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND What lights shall a vessel being towed astern of another vessel show at night?
• Rule 24 – Towing and Pushing in the Navigation Rules (International & Inland) • The difference between the towing vessel’s lights and the towed vessel’s lights • Lights required for a power-driven vessel underway vs. a vessel being towed astern
• Ask yourself: Does a vessel being towed astern act like a normal power‑driven vessel, or does it have a more limited light requirement? • Think about what lights are needed so another vessel can tell the length and arrangement of the tow from astern and from the side. • Which lights does the towing vessel show that the towed vessel does NOT duplicate?
• Look up Rule 24(e) for the lights of a vessel being towed astern. • Verify whether a vessel being towed astern shows masthead lights of its own or only certain side/astern lights. • Confirm that the chosen option correctly describes all the lights required, and does not add lights that belong only on the towing vessel.
