BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND What light(s) must sailboats 20 meters in length show when underway at night?
β’ Rule 25 β Sailing Vessels and Vessels Under Oars in the Navigation Rules β’ The required lights for a sailing vessel underway at night when only under sail (not using engine) β’ The difference between sidelights, sternlight, and an all-round white light
β’ Ask yourself: For a sailboat over 12 meters in length, does the rule allow just sidelights alone, or must they be combined with something else? β’ Think: What is the normal "running light" setup for a vessel that is not at anchor and not restricted (just making way through the water)? β’ Consider: When is a single all-round white light used on small sailboats, and is 20 meters considered a small or larger sailboat under the rules?
β’ Verify in Rule 25 what changes at the length breakpoints of under 7 m, under 12 m, and 12 m and over for sailing vessels. β’ Confirm whether a sailboat 20 m in length must show both sidelights and a sternlight when underway at night. β’ Double-check that an all-round white light alone is only an option for very small sailing vessels under certain conditions, and see if a 20 m vessel fits that exception.
