BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND In which situation would risk of collision definitely exist?
• Risk of collision under Rule 7 – what "constant bearing, decreasing range" means • Relative bearing terms: on the bow, on the beam, on the quarter, abaft the beam • Difference between range decreasing vs. range increasing when judging collision risk
• For each choice, ask: Is the other vessel getting closer or farther away? What does that say about risk of collision? • How does a constant bearing compare to a rapidly changing or slightly changing bearing when assessing collision risk? • Does the position of the other vessel (ahead, abeam, abaft the beam) change the basic constant-bearing rule for collision risk?
• Identify which options show range decreasing versus range increasing. • Identify which options show constant bearing versus bearing changing. • Recall Rule 7: verify which combination – constant or changing bearing, decreasing or increasing range – indicates a clear risk of collision.
