BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND In restricted visibility, when must a towed vessel sound a fog signal?
• Rule 35 – Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility (International & Inland) • Difference between signals for the towing vessel and for a vessel being towed • Requirement that a towed vessel must be manned to sound its own signal
• Ask yourself: Does every towed vessel always sound a signal, or only in certain positions within the tow? • Consider what the rule says about a single vessel being towed versus multiple vessels in a tow – which one actually makes the fog signal? • Think about why the Rules might care whether the towed vessel is manned or unmanned in restricted visibility.
• Verify in Rule 35 what it says about a vessel being towed and how often it must sound its signal. • Check whether the rule mentions “last vessel of the tow” when more than one vessel is being towed. • Confirm that the rule requires the towed vessel to be manned before it has to give a fog signal.
