BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND At night, power-driven vessels less than 12 meters in length may, instead of the underway lights for vessels under 50 meters, show which lights?
• Rule 23 – Power-Driven Vessels Underway in the Navigation Rules • Special provisions for small power-driven vessels under 12 meters • Difference between masthead light, sidelights, stern light, and all-round white light
• First recall the full lighting requirement for a power-driven vessel under 50 meters at night. Then ask: what part of that can be simplified for vessels under 12 meters? • Which combination of lights would still clearly show your aspect (which way you are heading) to another vessel? • Which option reflects a common small-boat arrangement where a single white light is visible all around plus colored lights at the bow?
• Verify which option includes both red/green sidelights so other vessels can see your heading. • Check which option replaces the separate masthead and stern lights with a single all-round white light. • Confirm that the configuration you choose is explicitly allowed for power-driven vessels under 12 meters in Rule 23.
