At 2103 you take the following set of bearings: Watch Hill Point Light bears 005° true Montauk Point Light bears 170° true Determine your 2103 fix.
• Two lines of position from simultaneous bearings will cross at your fix • A true bearing tells you the direction from your vessel to the object; the line of position is drawn through the object perpendicular to the bearing from the object to you • Small differences in latitude/longitude correspond to small shifts north/south and east/west on the chart
• On the chart, where would Watch Hill Point Light and Montauk Point Light be relative to each other, and what general area between them is reasonable for a vessel at 2103? • If your vessel sees Watch Hill Point Light at 005° true, in what general direction from you is that light? Likewise, if Montauk Point Light bears 170° true, where is that light relative to you? • Once you visualize your approximate spot between those two lights, which choice best matches that plotted location in terms of being slightly north/south and east/west?
• Confirm you are interpreting true bearings correctly: the bearing is from your vessel to the light • Visualize which way latitude increases/decreases (north vs south) and longitude increases/decreases (east vs west) on the chart in this area • Check that your chosen position is geographically reasonable between Watch Hill Point Light and Montauk Point Light on the Block Island Sound chart, not on land or unrealistically close to either point
