At 0820, you take the following bearings:
Falkner Island Light: 052°t rue Branford Reef Light: 307°t
What are the set and drift since 0730?
• Set and drift are found by comparing your DR (dead reckoning) position with your FIXED position at the same time • Use the two simultaneous bearings to get a fix at 0820, then compare it to the DR position from 0730 run forward to 0820 • The set is the direction FROM the DR position TO the fix; the drift is the distance between them divided by the time interval
• From your 0730 DR, run your course and speed ahead to 0820 to get the DR position. Have you clearly marked that on your chart? • Plot the 0820 fix using the bearings of Falkner Island Light and Branford Reef Light. Which way (in true degrees) do you have to draw a line from the DR position to reach that fix? • Measure the distance between the DR and the fix and convert it to knots over the 50‑minute interval. How does 50 minutes relate to one hour when you compute drift?
• Be sure your bearings are treated as TRUE bearings from the ship to the lights, then converted to lines of position correctly on the chart • Confirm the time interval from 0730 to 0820 (in hours) before you divide distance by time for drift • Double‑check that your final set direction is the course line FROM DR to fix, expressed as a true bearing (0°–359°T)
