At 0802, the radar range and bearing to Branford Reef Light are 350°pgc at 0.8 mile, and the north point of Falkner Island are 090°pgc at 6.7 miles. What were the set and drift that you encountered since 0740?
• Set and drift (set = direction of current; drift = speed of current in knots) • Plotting dead reckoning (DR) vs. observed position (fix) to find current • Converting between PGC (per gyro compass) bearings and true directions/set
• From your course and speed made good from 0740 to 0802, what DR position would you expect with no current? • When you plot the two radar LOPs (lines of position) at 0802, where is your actual position relative to your DR position (direction and distance)? • Once you know the direction and distance between DR and fix, how do you convert that into a set (°T) and drift (knots) over the 22‑minute interval?
• Be sure you are using true directions when stating set (convert from pgc if needed). • Carefully measure the distance in nautical miles between DR and fix before dividing by time to get drift. • Confirm whether the current pushed you toward the east (085°T) or toward the west (265°T) when comparing the DR and actual positions.
