All wire rope used in shipboard cargo gear must be identified and described in a certificate. The certificate shall certify all of the following EXCEPT the __________.
• 46 CFR requirements for certification of shipboard cargo gear wire rope • Typical information found on wire rope test certificates (material, construction, test data) • What information is specific to the vessel versus specific to the wire rope itself
• Look at which options are permanent characteristics of the wire rope and which are test-related data that must be documented • Decide which item, if left off the certificate, would NOT prevent someone from fully identifying and verifying the wire rope and its strength • Ask yourself whether the regulation focuses on the gear itself or on the particular ship that happens to be using it
• Verify which items are measurable test results required for proof of strength • Check which items are physical construction details of the wire rope • Identify if any choice is information that could change when the same type of certified wire rope is used on different vessels (i.e., not inherent to the rope or its test)
